PlayStation in Concert- Review

This evening I was lucky to be at a world premiere of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performing the music of PlayStation games at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

I purchased the tickets a couple of months ago as I love the Royal Albert Hall for its acoustics and atmosphere, and the chance to hear some of my favourite video game soundtracks performed in such a space by arguably the foremost orchestra in the world, was too good an opportunity to pass up.

The day before the event I received an email notification to download a free app called EnCue, which provides information on the track being performed and details about the composer and the game. I was a bit reluctant as I thought it would take me out of the moment but I did download it, however on the night I didn't use it, preferring to let the music take me on a journey... and what a journey it was!

The presenter for the performance was Jessica Curry, one of my favourite video game composers who, as well as soundtracking 'Dear Esther' and 'Everyone Has Gone to the Rapture,' hosts the Classic FM video game soundtrack show 'High Score.'

Her compering was short and brought context to the pieces, an amuse-bouche for the ears if you will. She encouraged audience participation via Tweets and read a few out between pieces after the interval. Her witty repartee and jokes at the expense of Hastings and Shropshire were hilarious and endeared her to an already enraptured and enthusiastic audience.

The music itself was exhilarating, to hear some of my favourite pieces performed by a full symphony orchestra with a sympathetic light display was magical. The pieces took me from the deepest depths of the oceans to vast desert vistas to the post apocalyptic near future where robotic dinosaurs ruled the world.

Some of the tracks, like 'The World of Flow' from 'Flow' and 'You Were There' from 'Ico,' were intensely emotional and touching whilst the 'Dark Cloud' theme and the 'Little Big Planet' track were playful in a big band kind of way, full of jazzy brass and swagger. There were definite highlights for me, the tracks from 'Ico,' 'Shadow of the Colossus' and 'The Last Guardian' were particular favourites as they are some of my most listened to soundtracks ever and also because the rose tinted nostalgia I get from recalling when I played those games at certain times in my life. The choral piece from 'Everyone Has Gone to the Rapture' was enthralling and deeply touching and the encore, an 'Uncharted' medley was a fitting way to end this celebration of PlayStation.

I thoroughly enjoyed the concert and hope that it is the start of something annual as it is a great way to bring a lot of people, who may not traditionally visit places like the Royal Albert Hall or attend classical music performances together for a magical, almost otherworldly experience. Also, events like this bring the music of video games to the forefront, challenging the misconception that video game music is all bleeps, bloops and chiptunes and that all games are inherently violent wastes of time. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra might be solving the problem of reaching new, younger audiences via video game soundtracks and I for one am glad. The beauty of the music shows that there is another side to video games; an artform. I only wish that Sony had got their act together and sorted out some merch as they would have made a killing and the fans would have gone away with a momento of a magical night.

Moomins and the Comet Live Re-score

I have a love for the Moomins as many of you may know. I've discussed the Moomins multiple times before, when talking about the 80s stop motion animation, the recent vinyl soundtrack release from the 80s animation, the exhibition at the Southbank Centre and my visit to Moomin World in Finland. 

Well I am excited to announce that one of the original composers for the 80s Moomins show, Graeme Miller, will perform a re-score live at the Royal Albert Hall’s Elgar Room. He will be joined by Jamie Telford and the pair will be using a kitchen table-full of small instruments (including a box of cornflakes), whilst the episode plays on the big screen

This is a rare chance for Moomin fans old and new to experience Film Polski’s charming herky-jerky animation with a live accompaniment. I purchased tickets for my wife and I and am extremely excited to see this score played out in front of us. The show is only an hour long but hopefully will be a joyous celebration of Tove Jansson's marvellous creations.

Prog Rock and Computer Game Music

Prog Rock or Progressive Rock to give it it's full name, is looked down upon in this day and age. To many it is seen as pretentious and ridiculous, and to be honest it did get that way.... with 20 minute keytar solos and unlistenable tracks which only made sense when you were stoned (apparently, as I've never touched drugs to check the validity of this statement). However this is a disservice to the entire genre, there were amazing bands who pushed the boundaries in live shows and wonderful albums made, and their influence can still be felt today in bands like Arcade Fire, Muse and Radiohead.

But for a whole generation of computer game composers Prog was the inspiration for their music, especially in Japan, Germany and Italy where Prog seemed to really resonate with the people.  Legendary Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu cites Emerson, Lake and Palmer and Uriah Heap as his inspirations. Tim Follin, game composer for many NES, C64 and SNES games has said that the audio limitations of older machines created a challenge when working on computer game music; to create music that was not only enjoyable the first time but also on subsequent loops until the level/ boss/ mission was done.

Prog Rock offered a good link as many albums were concept albums which contained characters, themes and stories... not too different from computer games. A lot of 8 and 16-bit games could get very intricate and complex and the music had to reflect this and so you had a situation where games composers were liberally borrowing elements from Prog Rock.

One of the best examples I can think of is the last battle in Final Fantasy 6, where the team face off against Kefka... listen to this piece and tell me it's not Prog Rock inspired. The game left such an indelible mark on me that I even created a deadpixels cover homage of it with me and Simon as lead characters. As well as being an epic battle the music is such an integral part of it, composed in 3 parts to reflect the 3 transformations of Kefka.

Rick Wakeman , the legendary keyboardist from Prog Rock group 'Yes' went solo in the 70's to create thematic albums around books and history. His most famous work is 'Journey To The Centre Of The Earth' which was a landmark achievement, selling over 15 million records worldwide. 2014 marked the 40th Anniversary of the release of the album and I was lucky enough to get tickets for the concert at the royal Albert Hall.

The concert was amazing, a real spectacle. To see a sellout audience silent and entranced by Rick Wakeman and his  orchestra brought home to me the fact that even though Prog did get crazy mad, there were still amazing gems that still shine today and this was one of them.

Prog is not dead, it is alive and well!
